Ours is a realistic drawing curriculum that has enough structure for achieving skill and success with enough freedom for individual creativity. It is a progressive art curriculum with drawing projects starting with animal drawings and progressing to Still Life, volume drawing and shading, faces, and an introduction to acrylic painting. For children and teens. Students will learn to use a variety of media. 8 students maximum per class.

Beginning Drawing I - Ages 6-9

Our's is a realistic drawing curriculum that has enough structure for achieving highly skilled success and enough freedom for individual creativity.

Students will learn to use high quality markers and colored pencils to build confidence and produce a finished drawing during each 2 hour class.

Times: Wednesday, 1 -3 pm

Intermediate Art I- Ages 10-13

Our drawing curriculum teaches students the necessary skills to achieve high-quality drawings, including Still-Life, portraits, using markers and colored-pencils, then progressing to pastel and acrylic paint to explore beginning painting technique. 

Time: Thursday, 1-3 pm

Drawing & Painting - Teens & Adult (Ages 14 & Up)

In How to Paint Like the Old Masters, instructor Mark DeRaud will be giving individualized arts instruction for serious students starting at age 14, contingent on approval of portfolio. Curriculum includes:

  • how to think like an artist
  • drawing
  • oil painting
  • painterly painting
  • developing craft and skill
  • creating meaning in your art work

Time: Thursday, 4-6:30 pm

(Other time-slots will be added to give more instruction time as needed)

Drawing - Ages 13-adult

For those students more serious in pursuing art technique, this is a beginner's course in drawing instruction. Mark will teach principles of line, shape, form, perspective, and will include copying Old Master's drawings, learning to work from life and memory. 

Classes start on Tuesday, March 19th and run through June 4, 2019.

summer art camps

Camp 1 - June 24-28, 9:30 - 1 pm: Animals

Age 6

Campers will create an animal drawing  every day in a variety of mediums, as well as make their own Art Journal to keep their art creations from class and to use for the rest of the summer. These are different animals than the ones we draw during the school year.

Cost: 3.5 hr. session - $200/week or $40/day per single session

Bring a bag lunch & wear a swimsuit under a cover-up for parent-supervised swimming at the end of class.


Camp 2 - July 8 - 12, 9:30 - 1 pm: Fun with Watercolor

Campers will learn how to use various watercolor techniques, using collage and paper craft, to create works of art, and over the week will make their own Art Journal to keep their art creations 

from class to use for the rest of the summer.

Camp 3 - July 22 - 26, 9:30 - 1 pm: Story-Art

Age 5

Campers will create their own imaginative illustrations and characters, then write poems and stories to go with them. They will also make a decorative book for all their work.

Ages 8-11 (must know how to write/print)

Cost: 3.5 hr. session - $200/week or $40/day per single session

Camp 4 - August 5 - 9, 9:30 - 1 pm: Faces, Faces & More Faces!

Age 10

Campers will learn to draw the human face and portraits in all different styles, and will also make a decorative portfolio for their work.

Age 9 - 12 (or show competency)

Art Camp for Teens - June 24 - 28, 2 - 4:30 pm: Faces & Portraits

For serious art students, ages 13-18.


Students will learn to draw the human form, starting with faces, from memory and with various techniques, including copying the Old Masters, grid, and from life.

Cost: 2.5 hr. session, $200/week or $40 per single day session, or $20 per hour of instruction. 

Art Camp for Teens - July 8 - 12, 2 - 4:30 pm: Learn to Paint Like Van Gogh

A fun week long exploration of the style of Vincent Van Gogh, producing an acrylic painting by the end of the week.

Cost: 2.5 hr. session, $200/week or $40 per single day session, or $20 per hour of instruction.

Students will learn to draw by learning to see, and take home a beautiful drawing every week. 


Students will be introduced to the elements of art and will learn to draw animals with step-by-step instruction. Weekly 2 hour classes include lessons on the color wheel, line, shape, form, and an introduction to Still Life. Mediums include high-quality markers, color pencils, and pastel.

Time (Tentative): Tuesday, 3 - 5 pm

Beginning Drawing II - Ages 10 - 13

Students will learn to draw by learning to see, and take home a beautiful drawing every week.

Students will integrate the elements of art into work on Still Life, contour and volume drawing and shading, and will be introduced to drawing faces and acrylic painting. Mediums include high-quality markers, color pencils, pastel, conte' crayon, and acrylic paint.

Intermediate Art II - For continuing & new students * Ages 10 - 13

Age 11

Students will continue to develop their ability to see.


Having completed most of the Intermediate Art I curriculum, students will continue to develop their skill in Still Life, Plein Air, developing great skill in following instruction in contour drawing, copying the Old Masters, and learning to draw faces from memory and life, prepared for advanced level courses. Mediums include high-quality markers, color pencil, pastel, conte' crayon, acrylic paint, and mixed-media work.

* New students must show examples of competency in their work in order to join the class.

This class meets the a-g requirement for credit in applying to the UC system.
